Oral-B is an American oral hygiene brand that specializes in the following dental products:
- toothbrushes (electric and manual)
- dental floss
Dr. Robert W. Hutson designed and patented the first Oral-B toothbrush in 1950. He had previously served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. When he returned home from the war (he was stationed in Guam, which is where he met his wife), he set up practice in San Jose, where he began researching and experimenting with toothbrush material. This is because he noticed through his work as a dentist that stiff toothbrush bristles damaged gums, which often caused painful dental infections. Hutson invented the world’s first soft nylon bristle toothbrush, which in 1950 was branded Oral-B 60, because of the 60 bristle tufts. The “B” in Oral-B supposedly stands for “brush.”
In 1969, Oral-B was the first toothbrush to go to the Moon aboard the Apollo 11 mission.
In 1984, Oral-B was purchased by The Gillette Company, where it became the world leader in dental products.
In 1991, Oral-B and Braun co-released the Braun Oral-B Plaque Remover, which was the first power toothbrush that was proven to clean teeth better than a regular manual toothbrush.
In 2001, Dr. Robert W. Hutson died at the age of 81.
In 2006, Procter & Gamble purchased Oral-B.
In 2014, Procter & Gamble developed the world’s first smartphone-connected toothbrush for Oral-B, which connects via Bluetooth and is programmed with a dentist.
Oral-B nylon bristled toothbrushes are among of the most significant inventions of the modern era, in terms of oral health and mouth care. There hasn't been such a leap in dental products since the invention of the hog-bristled toothbrushes of the late 1700s.
Oral-B also partnered with media companies like Nickelodeon and Walt Disney Company, offering products that are made specifically for children and babies 2 months+.
Oral-B dental floss is the #1 floss recommended by dentists. According to Oral-B, there is a floss for each and every one in the family! Whether you have braces, tight places or open spaces! Oral-B Glide Pro Health, for instance is a deep cleaning floss for deep crevices.
